  • Reuters remote system for covering Space Shuttle launches described in video
    Photographer Scott Audette has published a fascinating video describing in detail the remote triggering and transmitting system assembled to cover launches of NASA's Space Shuttle for Reuters. The video, called Live from Launch Pad 39A, runs 10.5 minutes and shows Audette and colleagues on site at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, preparing to photograph the liftoff of Space Shuttle Endeavour earlier this month.

  • Post shows us a gallery of unusual photos
    The Washington Post has collected images for another gallery of the Weird, Wild and Wacky.

  • Camera Bits releases Photo Mechanic 4.5.4
    Camera Bits has released version 4.5.4 of Photo Mechanic, its pro photo browsing and transmitting application for Mac and Windows. Minor feature tweaks and bug fixes are the main changes in this release, which is a free update for those who licensed the software on or after March 2007.

  • Canon releases digital camera software updates
    Canon has posted updates to Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility, WFT Utility and Picture Style Editor for Mac and Windows, bringing new features as well as support for digital SLRs up to and including the EOS 5D Mark II. They've also released a new version of Canon RAW Codec for Windows, which also adds support for the EOS 5D Mark II.

  • Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter on track to ship early next month
    The Shape Shifter, an innovative expanding/contracting photo backpack we wrote about last month, is on schedule to ship worldwide in early December, says Think Tank Photo President Doug Murdoch, both direct from the company and at retailers that carry their products. Murdoch projects that supplies of the Shape Shifter will be tight in the first several weeks of release, particularly in North America.

  • Noise Ninja for Aperture updated to v2.0.4
    Earlier this month, PictureCode released Noise Ninja for Aperture 2.0.4, a bug-fix update of its noise reduction plug-in for Apple's pro photo management and RAW conversion application for Mac.

  • Configurator for Photoshop CS4 posted on Adobe Labs
    A prerelease version of Configurator, a custom panel creation utility for Photoshop CS4 on Mac and Windows, is now available for download from the Adobe Labs website.

  • NPR interview and story feature Annie Leibovitz
    National Public Radio (npr) features a taped interview and story called Annie Leibovitz: The View From Behind The Lens in which she talks about some of the circumstances behind her celebrity portraits.

  • Nikon releases firmware update for Speedlight SB-900
    Nikon has released a firmware update for the Speedlight SB-900. Firmware v5.02 corrects a bug that could lead to overexposure and makes a minor change to the unit's TTL auto flash behaviour. Installing the firmware requires the SB-900 be connected to a Nikon D3, D300, D700 or D90 digital SLR camera.

    While The Boston Globe's collection of image galleries called The Big Picture always sets a high standard, we try to pick out what we think are the best ones. This week was easy with a couple of outstanding image galleries from the California wildfires (yet again) and Afghanistan's Korengal Valley where Getty Images' John Moore was in the thick of the war with U.S. troops.
