ImageIt’s the only explanation I can come up with. I show all the signs of any typical addiction. It is the first thing I think of in the morning when I wake up, overly tired and groggy from the late night I spent organizing and editing. And checking my downloads. And uploading more. (More coffee....) Let's try a vector again. Check the acceptance status of my most recent uploads. Curse the reviewers for any rejection. Pace for awhile, fretting fiercely over the horrid injustice that has been thrown upon me like a wet blanket. Imagining the reviewer’s maniacal laughter as he or she arbitrarily clicks the REJECT button again and again with no regard for the image content. Convinced it is the only explanation for that rejection.

ImageI am thrilled, proud, tickled, pleased and smug….and….just, well, stoked!  Who would have ever thought that this would be a watershed event?.  A milestone, I must say!  Even an epipha…..nah – not an epiphany, but still pretty cool.

I actually (are you ready?) I actually mustered up the gumption to ask an almost complete stranger to model for me!

Now, you pros are probably laughing your heads off at me right about now.  Well, I certainly hope so!  But, please keep in mind that this column is more or less focused on the amateur’s venture into photography via microstock.  So, while you might be jaded and cynical, I am, and many others are, still a bit unused to much of what is required – and I personally believe approaching ANYONE to model is a hurdle for a lot of us.

ImageALAS! I’ve got writer’s block!!! Whatever shall I do?

Wait a minute. I’m writing this now, so how can it be that I have writer’s block? Well, that just doesn’t make any sense…….OH! THAT’s right – it’s PHOTOGRAPHER’S BLOCK.

Whatever shall I do?

Honestly, I really am kind of “stuck” at the moment! Nothing is inspiring me. Nothing is motivating me. Nothing, I tell you, NOTHING comes to mind for the next shoot. I feel pathetic. After all, am I not a photographer? Do I not have a deep and abiding belief that we are all surrounded by subject matter in every walk of life? Why, the yearly calendar itself is poised on the brink of a glut of holidays and celebrations that should be a source of ideas that could go on forever. Micro stock photography is growing by leaps and bounds, so there are endless numbers of galleries to look at for inspiration. There are endless numbers of real professionals who participate in micro stock to teach, to critique, to advise!

Image…came to me recently.    The photographers who are experienced and successful at microstock actually know what they are doing.  And I also have determined that their advice is good!  I tried following some advice I received from someone who’s work I admire very much, Nicole Weiss (I’ll be introducing her in just a moment), and I got instant results.

So the overall message of this article is to encourage you to take the advice of those who are succeeding at microstock,.  More specifically, I’ll tell you the tip I got I got from Nicole.  It’s keywords.  Yep. Keywords.   Not a big surprise if you’ve been paying attention to what all the pros say.  However, it hasn’t come easily to me, so I just ignored all the articles.    Well, it occurred to me to give it a try and my statistics picked up immediately.

ImagePatience is a virtue, or so they say.  I don’t know how virtuous it may or may not be, but I do know that if you don’t have patience, microstock just might not be for you.

Oh, I admit it’s hard.  Especially at first, when you’ve got that first batch all together.  You’ve pored over and over what you’ve chosen as your very best material.  You’ve looked at them from every angle you can think of.  You’ve tweaked them, you’ve edited, you’ve enhanced them and cropped.  After all of that careful scrutiny, you muster up enough gumption to actually send them to THE REVIEWERS.
