Correll was born in Pensacola, Florida in 1959, which was her mother’s home town and where her father was stationed for flight training in the US Navy. She grew up moving frequently, even spending some time in Japan. Her southern roots are deep, however, and in 1991, Correll returned to Florida with her husband. This time to stay. Correll’s interests in art and music developed equally: before she finished high school, she’d had her first gallery showing of her paintings and joined forces with some friends to form a rock and roll band. During the next few years, Correll attended college briefly and continued to build her musical skills, diverting her attention from her paintings. She met and married fellow Florida native Rob Correll through her interest in music. Together, they began to pursue a career as professional musicians. Although she missed her art, it would be several years before she would begin painting again. © Perry Correll
It was during the eighties, when living in Southern California, that she began painting again. Also, during that time, she received a gift of her first SLR camera. At last, she would be able to learn about photography, which had been a long-time dream of this creative person. From flying planes and scuba diving to playing guitar and home recording, the Corrells have shared a number of adventures through the years. Crediting each other with complete support for each of their ventures, they have both been tremendously pleased and inspired with the recent changes in the photography industry. Like so many other things, photography has been strongly impacted by the digital age. Correll believes the ability to digitally edit photographs has been very liberating to her artistically. She has found that working on a “digital” painting provides much the same satisfaction as picking up a brush and canvas. Encountering the expected resistance to the photos she filters heavily, she has developed the following philosophy: "There is an ongoing dispute in the photographic community in regards to photo editing. I agree that you cannot compare a technically excellent photo with a heavily edited photo. However, I believe there is room for both styles. I tend to concentrate more on the end product. I call that "imaging" rather than photography. By approaching my camera this way, I hope to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes, whether it be for traditional photography or for something a little different." Discovering the field of microstock in January of 2005, Correll has broadened her scope of abilities as a photographer and an artist. A charter member of Orlando’s Sunshine Camera Club , her current projects include participation in several micro-stock agencies while continuously working at improving her skills as a photographer and as an “imagist”. Most recently, Correll has joined StockPhotographer.info as a columnist, offering an inside glimpse into the constantly changing world of micro-stock photography.
